Demo projects

Three finished projects to open in Polyquill and take apart: a novel, a world and a campaign. Between them they use almost every feature, and they are yours to change.

A novel

The Hound of the Baskervilles

The whole of Conan Doyle's novel, set up the way a writer would keep it: fifteen chapters split into scenes, with synopses, statuses and targets, and five months of writing history.

  • Chapters and scenes with synopses, labels, statuses and word targets
  • Holmes, Watson, the Baskervilles and the Stapletons, and the moor's places
  • A dated timeline of the plot in 1889, each event linked to its scenes
  • Snapshots of two scenes, and a revision note left out of the export
  • Standard manuscript format export settings
  • Progress charts filled by a made-up writing history

Arthur Conan Doyle, The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902), public domain.

The outliner listing the chapters of The Hound of the Baskervilles with their synopses, labels, statuses, word counts and targets.

A world

The Lantern Charts

An original island world with its own calendar, a thousand years of history, cultures, maps and portraits, and the opening of a story set in it.

  • A calendar of its own: festival days, a six-day week, a leap festival, four eras and two moons
  • A thousand years of history on the timeline, in four arcs
  • Characters with birth and death dates, so the timeline shows their ages
  • Places, cultures and their sigils, and notes on the calendar
  • Maps and portraits in the text and on corkboard cards
  • The first two chapters of a story, with a snapshot of an earlier draft

The demo world's timeline: a thousand years in four eras shown as a band above the ruler, with events in lanes for the world's history, the heroine's story, the scholars and the crown.

A tabletop campaign

The Bells of Duskmere

An original fantasy campaign as a game master keeps it: session notes, player characters and NPCs, factions, locations, quests and handouts, and the in-world timeline of play.

  • Session notes, played, prepped and planned, as statuses
  • Player characters and NPCs, with portraits
  • Factions with their goals and clocks, and a floor plan of the dungeon
  • Open, resolved and failed quests, a handout and a bell-song
  • House rules and a random encounter table
  • The campaign's timeline, from the old flood to the next full moon

The demo campaign's first arc on the corkboard: six sessions as cards, each with its in-world date.

Opening a demo

  1. Download Polyquill and start it. The 30-day trial begins on its own; there is nothing to sign up for.
  2. Choose File > Open and pick the demo, or drop the file onto Polyquill's window.
  3. Look around, change anything, and save it wherever you like. The demo you downloaded is an ordinary file, and so is everything you write.

The writing history in each demo is made up, and ends on the day the demo was built, so its charts look the way yours will after a few months of writing.
